The encounter between Jesus and the Canaanite woman initially leaves us shocked and even troubled. How could Jesus, who is always compassionate and merciful, appear so harsh towards a woman who was in great distress? How could He remain silent in the face of her suffering? How could He say that He was sent only to a particular group of people?

These are natural questions that may arise when we hear today's Gospel. However, Jesus knew the depth of this woman's faith from the very beginning. His response was not intended to reject her but to reveal her extraordinary faith to those who were present.

This Gospel teaches us an important lesson about faith, but it also reveals something profound about God's ways. Jesus makes it clear that the woman had no claim to His favour. He even uses the image of a dog, highlighting her unworthiness rather than suggesting that God's love is reserved for only a select few.

This is where the Gospel speaks directly to us.

Through our sinfulness, we, too, have become unworthy of God's grace. We belong to that same group of sinners who have disappointed God through our thoughts, words, and actions. Yet, what is remarkable in this passage is the woman's response. She does not react with anger or resentment. She does not walk away in disappointment. Instead, she responds with humility.

Accepting her lowliness, she uses the very image that Jesus had given her and says that even dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table. She does not demand equality. She does not insist on her rights. She simply appeals to the Lord's mercy.

This should also be our attitude in prayer. We must approach God, not with a sense of entitlement, but with humility, recognising that His grace is not something we deserve but a gift that He freely gives because of His love and mercy.

Such humility requires self-awareness. It requires us to examine ourselves honestly and acknowledge our faults, weaknesses, and shortcomings. This is why the practice of examining our conscience is so important. We need to become aware of our weaknesses, our emotional triggers, our recurring struggles, and those areas of our lives that need conversion.

Self-awareness helps us understand where we truly stand before God. It shows us what needs to change and where we need God's grace the most.

However, self-awareness alone is not enough. It must be accompanied by faith.

The Canaanite woman not only recognised her need but also believed that Jesus could help her. This faith became the source of her perseverance. She refused to give up because she was convinced that the One she was approaching had the power to answer her prayer.

Perseverance is always rooted in faith.

Jesus Himself teaches this lesson in the parable of the persistent widow in Luke 18:1-8. The widow continues to plead for justice until the judge finally responds to her request. In the same way, the Canaanite woman continues to seek the Lord despite apparent rejection.

Her persistence teaches us an important lesson. We must never give up.

No matter how many hardships, disappointments, or humiliations we encounter, we must continue to trust in the Lord. Those who persevere in faith will eventually experience God's grace.

This Gospel also reveals God's merciful nature. At first, Jesus appears unwilling to grant the woman's request. Yet, after witnessing her faith and perseverance, He praises her and grants her petition.

This should be a source of great consolation for us.

Although we are unworthy, God, in His mercy, listens to those who approach Him with faith. His unconditional love constantly invites us to repent, to trust in Him, and to strive sincerely for conversion.

This assurance gives us the confidence to continue seeking His grace, even when we feel unworthy.

Therefore, let us pray for the grace of self-awareness so that we may recognise our true condition before God. Let us pray for the gift of faith so that we may trust completely in His power and His mercy, and let us pray for the strength to persevere, never giving up in times of difficulty.

May we not become distracted by worldly rewards, wealth, status, and temporary achievements. Instead, may we remain focused on the reward of eternal life and continue striving for the grace that leads us to it.

So, what lessons can we learn from the Canaanite woman?

• Accept your lowliness with humility.

• Believe firmly that, if the Lord wills it, He can provide.

• Persevere in faith and never give up.

May the faith, humility, and perseverance of the Canaanite woman inspire us to place our complete trust in the Lord and to seek His grace with confidence and humility.
